Birth videos!

So, I’ve started Birth Video Tuesdays over on the Facebook page. Mostly, this is just an excuse to watch endless hours of beautiful birth videos (seriously, I can’t get enough). But it’s also a way to expose people to birth. Too often, I think, people go into birth having either a skewed idea of what childbirth is, or no idea whatsoever. In the past, birth was simply a part of life (and in many other cultures, this is still the case). Today, our only exposure typically comes from what we see in the media– which is usually over-dramatized to jack up ratings.

My hope in sharing lots and lots of birth videos is to help people understand a basic truth– birth is normal. It is a normal life event that people experience all over the world. Sometimes, it’s really really beautiful. Sometimes, it’s a bit (or a lot) scary. Mostly, it just happens. Everyone who wants to can do it, and everyone has been through it in someway at least once. It’s a lot like the rest of life– it always goes better when we let go of our ideas of controlling it and just go with the flow.

All that being said, here are a few lovely videos for you to check out.

A lovely video of a hospital birth with a midwife.

One of my favorite depictions of birth in the mass media! Bones has a beautiful unassisted childbirth in a barn. Yesssssss. (Try to ignore the poor quality)

And of course, a really really sweet home birth video. Enjoy!

The one thing I would love to see more of in the birth video world is diversity! Diversity of race, but also of family structure, gender-identity/presentation, sexual orientation, etc. Here is the challenge for all you readers out there: What are your favorite birth videos that feature non-traditional or alternative families? Share in the comments below!
