So, I love me some DemocracyNow! It’s one of the places I really enjoy getting my news. I was especially delighted to find this video of one of my news heroes (Amy Goodman) interviewing one of my midwifery heroes (Ina May Gaskin). As usual, Amy has some great questions and Ina May has some good answers. But I wish they would have gone further and asked deeper questions. First, here’s the video:
There are some great statistics here, highlighting the issues of maternal mortality here in the US. But that’s about it. I was really hoping for more questions about the huge gap in care between white women and women of color. According to Amnesty International “African-American women are nearly four times more likely to die of pregnancy-related complications than white women”. That is a staggering statistic. And that’s just African-American women– the numbers are even more grave for Native American and Hispanic/Latina folk. I was disappointed in this interview because the racial disparities were only barely mentioned, and it is such a pressing issue.
What do you think? Were racial disparities covered enough for your taste in this short interview? Hate Ina May Gaskin or Amy Goodman? Wanna see more solution and less problem?
